Curriculum Overview
Introduction
The curriculum is all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote children's learning and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also a range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of our children. It includes the 'hidden curriculum' i.e. what the children learn from the way they are treated and how they are expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible adults, who can work and co-operate with others, while developing their knowledge and skills, so they can achieve their true potential.
Aims
The aims of our school curriculum are:
- To develop the all-round potential of the children through the vehicle of a rich, broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum;
- To help children to acquire intellectual skills and knowledge as well as being able to apply them;
- To promote a positive attitude towards learning, so that children enjoy coming to school, and acquire a solid basis for lifelong learning;
- To develop children’s growth mind-set and ability to embrace a challenge achieving the highest level they possible can;
- The development of a stimulating environment which is organised, secure, structured and purposeful;
- To provide for children's physical development;
- To enable children to be creative and to develop their own thinking, problem solving skills and resilience;
- To teach children about their developing world, including how their environment and society have changed over time;
- To help children understand Britain’s cultural heritage;
- To promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs;
- To develop pupils cultural capital through exposure to experiences such as museum visits and music festivals;
- To enable children to be positive citizens in society;
- To use a variety of experiences in order to develop pupils character skills such as using their initiative, intellectual engagement, open-mindedness, resilience, self-control, social awareness and ability to work as part of a team;
- To fulfil all the requirements of the National Curriculum and the Medway Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education;
- To teach children to have an awareness of their own spiritual development, and to understand right from wrong;
- To help children understand the importance of truth and fairness, so that they grow up committed to equal opportunities for all;
- To enable children to have respect for themselves and high self-esteem, and to be able to live and work co-operatively with others.
Intent
The curriculum is intended to:
- Increase children's knowledge and understanding across all subjects
- Develop children's skills i.e. their ability to apply their knowledge and understanding
- Help children become more aware of the world around them
- Foster positive attitudes to learning both within and outside school
Implementation
Our curriculum is carefully planned and structured to ensure that learning is continuous, and that the children make good progress with the development of their learning. We seek to ensure that the knowledge and skills gained are used across the whole curriculum, and not simply in isolation, and that meaningful links are made between subjects in our termly themes.
The curriculum engages the children’s interest, encourages and motivates them to want to learn. It is exciting and offers children first hand experiences to reinforce their learning and to underpin their growing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes.
Using the Prospectus Curriculum we have adopted a cross curricular or topic approach to curriculum planning. We plan the curriculum carefully, so that there is coherence and full coverage of all aspects of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework, and there is planned progression in all curriculum areas, including Science which is based on the Kent Scheme of work.
